When you choose to purchase a carbon offset for $1.25 through any of our three rental car operations — Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car — you are assured your purchase goes to fund a high-quality, independently verified, greenhouse gas reduction effort aimed at balancing out the environmental impact of an average rental car operating in our fleet. What's more, we will double the environmental benefit by matching customers' offset purchases dollar for dollar, up to $1 million.
Here's a look at the quality assurance standards that govern our carbon offset program:
- The money that our customers pay to purchase greenhouse gas reduction offsets will result in verified, measurable and permanent carbon reductions.
- We believe we have chosen one of the most respected and trustworthy partners in TerraPass to source and purchase carbon offset projects for our customers.
- Our offset purchases are directed by the Chief Environmental Officer of TerraPass, a pioneer in the voluntary carbon offset market; in fact, TerraPass conceived and executed some of the first carbon offset transactions for consumers in North America.
- TerraPass works to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by funding projects that produce energy from wind power; reduce harmful methane emissions from landfill operations and from animal waste at large farming operations; and produce energy from gases sequestered at these landfill and farming operations.
- Each carbon offset project supported through our program meets a broadly accepted project standard that is determined by an independent third-party verifier who has no connection to our company, to TerraPass or to the developer of the offset project.
- Each carbon offset project we support meets the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), an international standard modeled on the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
- Every TerraPass offset purchase is audited against standards set by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions, creator of Green-e, the nation's leading renewable energy certification program.
- Every offset we sell will remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere in the same year that the customer purchases it, as opposed to only offering the promise of future reductions.
- The greenhouse gas offsets we support are "additional," meaning these offsets would not have occurred were it not for our customers' offset purchases and our subsequent company match.
